Echoing us ...
How to transform our world from the key of SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT? What are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals?
The Daughters of Christ and the lacios, we consider that the education of the men and women of tomorrow has a lot to do with the possibilities of transforming our world from this point of view. In 2015, the UN approved the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development, an opportunity for countries and their societies to embark on a new path to improve the lives of all, leaving no one behind. The Agenda has 17 Sustainable Development Goals, ranging from the elimination of poverty to the fight against climate change, education, equality for women, the defense of the environment or the design of our cities.
Hence, we echo it and transcribe the 17 Sustainable Development goals, as collected by the NGO EDUCO. Emphasizing that they are goals that will guarantee a better future for all. They are as follows:
- End poverty in all its forms everywhere
Poverty has been reduced by 50% since 2000, but there are still millions of people living on just $ 1.90 a day. Poverty has many consequences such as hunger, malnutrition, the lack of decent housing, the inability to access education or disease.
Achieving this objective means fostering economic growth that promotes equality and is sustainable.
- End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture
Agriculture and the food sector are essential to eliminate hunger and poverty. Currently the land and water of the oceans and rivers are degrading and suffer the effects of overexploitation.
The reform of the agrarian and food system around the world is essential for all hungry people to eat.
- Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
This objective is the basis of all the others because in order to achieve the rest of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) it is necessary to guarantee and promote health and well-being.
There is still much work to be done because maternal and neonatal mortality rates are so high, infectious diseases are spreading, and there is poor reproductive health. Among other actions, to achieve this objective, it will be necessary to promote initiatives that eradicate certain diseases, finance health systems, improve sanitation and increase access to medical services.
- Ensure inclusive, equitable and quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all
If you want to achieve sustainable development, quality education is the foundation. Education and literacy provide people with the necessary tools to lift themselves out of poverty and have a better future.
The reality is that there are currently more than 265 million children who are not in school. The problems to be fought are the poor state of the schools or the poor preparation of the teachers, among others.
- Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
Gender equality is a human right and the basis for achieving sustainability. In order to achieve equality, it is necessary for women and girls to have access to education, to medical care, to decent work and to be able to participate in political and economic decision-making processes.
- Guarantee the availability of water and its sustainable management and sanitation for all
Lack of drinking water or poor quality water have consequences for food security and the livelihoods of many people in the world. To ensure that everyone has access to safe water and sanitation, it is essential that the world's water resources be managed in a sustainable way.
- Ensure access to affordable, safe, sustainable and modern energy for all
Energy is used for many daily activities such as cooking or personal hygiene, however, more than 300 million people in the world continue to cook with highly polluting fuels.
To protect the environment, it is essential to promote the use of renewable energies in heating and transport, among other aspects, as well as the financing of cleaner technologies.
- Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all
Approximately half of the world's population is considered to live on less than $ 2 a day, and child exploitation occurs in many countries. In some countries, having a job does not help you get out of poverty. In this sense, with this objective, it is about ensuring that all people can have a quality job, so that unemployment is reduced and productivity and consumption are increased.
- Industry, innovation and infrastructure
Having a strong economy depends on making significant investments in the infrastructures of the countries. Innovation is also essential for a more productive and less polluting industry to exist. Although there has been a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions in manufacturing in recent years, the reduction has not been the same throughout the world.
- Reduce inequality within and between countries
Currently, there are great inequalities in countries and between countries with regard to access to health services, education and productive assets. To reduce inequalities, it is essential that exports from developing countries are favored and that tariffs are reduced.
- Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
In general, cities are considered to have helped many people to progress socially and economically and, in fact, cities have grown and continue to grow in such a way that by 2030, 5 billion people are expected to live in cities. To overcome the challenge that so many people live in cities, cities must become safe, inclusive, resilient and sustainable spaces.
- Guarantee sustainable consumption and production patterns
Unsustainable consumption produces pollution and degrades the environment, therefore, it is necessary to act from the root to bet on production systems that respect the environment and are sustainable. In addition, all people must choose sustainable ways of life to contribute to caring for nature and curbing climate change.
- Take urgent action to combat climate change and its effects
Climate change is a reality and it is producing negative effects on people, the economy and nature. To fight climate change in 2016, several countries signed the Paris Agreement and pledged to work to limit the rise in global temperature to less than 2 degrees.
- Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development
The seas and oceans are not only a source of life, they are also essential for trade and transport, but, currently, pollution and acidification are causing changes in ecosystems. In order to protect seas and oceans, effective regulation that controls overfishing and pollution is essential.
- Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation and halt the loss of biodiversity
More than 30% of the earth's surface is covered by forests and trees are essential elements to slow down climate change.
Currently, 13 million hectares are destroyed per year, causing desertification. The challenge is to protect forests, manage resource use sustainably and reduce desertification.
- Promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies
Peace is essential to achieve the rest of the SDGs, however, violence in all its manifestations continues to be a problem for people around the world, in this sense it is worth highlighting child abuse and its serious consequences.
The key is to legislate so that the norms are more effective and the rights of the people are protected.
- Revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development
It is useless to establish objectives if there are no agreements between all the actors that must participate: governments, private companies and citizens. In this sense, it is essential to foster alliances to pool efforts and resources and make the SDGs a reality.
